Bulk Shipping Services in Australia

Most of Australia’s commodity exports are shipped as bulk cargo, which, along with breakbulk cargo, serve as two of the most commonly seen types of non-containerised cargo. It is the cornerstone of global trade, allowing the mass transportation of unpackaged raw materials and commodities. Because of the sheer volume and the unique characteristics and handling requirements of these goods, specialised methods of transportation and handling are usually required.

    TYPES OF BULK CARGO

    1.

    DRY BULK CARGO

Dry bulk cargo refers to non-liquid, single commodity cargoes that are carried as one large parcel per ship. They are usually loaded into large holds via conveyor belt, and are discharged via suction, grabbers and bulldozers. Ships that carry such cargoes typically have large void spaces within the hull and are characterised by large flat hatches.

Common examples of dry bulk cargo are agricultural products or mineral ores, like wheat, barley, iron ore, alumina and bauxite among others.

Australia is a large shipper of the major dry bulk cargoes of iron ore, grain and coal, which form the vast majority of commodity exports from Australia to destinations mostly in Asia.

    2.

    WET BULK CARGO

Wet bulk cargo refers to commodities that are liquid, are often homogeneous, and are carried in large tanks within ships. Load and discharge take place via cargo being pumped on and off ship via pipelines.

Examples of wet bulk cargo include edible oils, liquefied petroleum gases, liquefied natural gas, refined products of oil and crude oil.
